Give us a little background on yourself! Where are you from? Hobbies? What did you do before Gillco?
-I come from a large family. We moved from Guatemala to Encinitas when I was five. I have three older sisters and one younger brother. My family has always been the driving force in my life. We’re all very close and spend a lot of time together. I graduated from Berkeley in December 2018 with a degree in Political Economy. I really enjoyed my time at Berkeley because I was able to learn from some truly great professors and I also had to opportunity to study abroad for a summer. I also worked for a Fine Arts Ticket Office on campus. I met Yo-Yo Ma once and he was really nice! One of the perks from this job was that we got free tickets to events so I was able to see a few shows/concerts for free. After Berkeley, I moved back home and decided to look for a job opportunity in accounting. My sister works as an accountant and she got me interested in the field.
-Hobbies: I like to sketch a lot. I have a few sketch pads at home filled with random drawings. I’ve always found it to be pretty relaxing and it’s something I like to do to de-stress. I also like to paint every now and then.
What does your position at Gillco Ingredients entail and how long have you been at the company?
-I focus on accounts receivable. I keep track of the incoming payments from our customers, do the daily deposit, review all orders that come through accounting, do billing, and send out invoices. I also review credit applications and monitor the accounting email.
-I have been with Gillco for almost a year now. It’ll be a year in mid-March.
What does a typical day look like for you?
-On most days, I arrive to the office at around 7am. I start my days with Credit Authorization, which means that I look at the orders that have been sent to accounting. I review customer accounts and see how I can proceed from there. Next, I usually work on BOLs and prepare orders that have shipped for billing. I bill these orders towards the end of my day or throughout my day. After my lunch, I go check on the mail and make the daily deposit which included checks and wires. I usually finish my day with Credit Authorization once again.
-Throughout my day, I monitor the accounting email. I answer inquiries from customers relating to invoices, payments, credit applications, and anything else accounting related. I follow up on other things that may have come up that day or I have been working on for some time.
What are some of the challenges for you in this role?
-I have certain tasks that I like to get done every day. I believe the biggest challenge for me is being able to complete these tasks on days when things get pretty busy. I really enjoy keeping busy, but not so much during these days when my time needs to be managed very efficiently.
What is the best part of your role/why do you like working at Gillco?
-This a pretty easy answer…the people! Everyone here is always very friendly and we all work well together. On my first day at Gillco, I felt very welcomed and that hasn’t changed.
-Gillco gave me the opportunity to work in accounting. I didn’t have a background in accounting prior to Gillco so I’ve learned a lot in my role.
